‘The Falling Angel’, 1922-47 Marc Chagall

Angel
Ian Harris

"Will God or someone else give me the strength to breathe the breath of prayer and mourning into my paintings, the breath of prayer for redemption and resurrection?"
Marc Chagall ‘My Life’

My work ‘Angel’ represents the drama and dynamic of colour and meaning within the painting ‘The Falling Angel’ by Marc Chagall. Painted between 1922-1947, the final version of this work includes motifs that sum up Chagall’s entire oeuvre: Jewish, Russian and Christian symbols, animals, instruments, people and angels.

"When Chagall paints you do not know if he is asleep or awake. Somewhere or other inside his head there must be an angel."
Pablo Picasso
