works on the theme of meta-narratives
and intertextuality

(2003)
meta: denoting position or condition behind, after, beyond or
transcending
narrative: account of connected events in order of happening
intertextuality: fertile relationships between signifiers and
quotation
The subheading for this work is
"an interface
between past and present."
"Experimental, atmospheric, contemplative landscapes interweaving
with fragmented melodies. The voices are ethereal, ghost-like. This is
music for the imagination."

A dark, mysterious world inhabited by strange life-forms.
This Holy City
- 8' 26
The whispered text at the start of this piece creates an intimate moment
which casts a shadow over the following conversation between guitar,
strings, percussion, electronic sounds and voices. This music is poised at the borderline, where
memory meets reality.
Rejected Earth
- 4' 09
Storm clouds sweep across the sky, shadows rush over parched earth. The
earth cries out.

A strange slow jazz begins, led by a trumpet solo. Overlaying this a
string orchestra is heard through a mask of distorted sound, like an early
sound recording conveying knowledge from the past. Words are spoken in
German. A lost knowledge is being imparted to the listener, encoded within
these layers and textures. "I have come to the conclusion, that I
have lost track of the world...I'm sorry...I say. What's wrong?...with
tears in his eyes..he speaks..no-one is here now, we have lost track of
the world."

My African Garden
- 4' 28
Repeating patterns of rhythm and melody weave together. This music echoes
the African Aesthetic of clarity of form and detail, balance and symmetry,
whilst embracing the essence of an ancient untamed landscape.

This piece was originally written for piano solo. The piano score is
played precisely by a midi harp on this recording. The glockenspiel and
string parts were then improvised around this pre-composed structure.
Using the score to refer to at the improvising stage, I was able to look
ahead and be influenced by music that was about to be played by the harp.
This helped to keep a sense of cohesion and beauty, whilst sensing the
nearby borderline: where improvisation disintegrates into chaos.
